By changing the distance between the incense dish and the heat source, you can fine-tune the warming intensity to explore different aromatic expressions of your natural resins.

Raise the dish for gentler warming or lower it for stronger heating, depending on the resin and your preferred fragrance experience.

The solid brass construction, weighted base and refined finish create an elegant appearance, while the bamboo handle and top cap provide heat-insulating contact points.

Two Ways to Experience Natural Resins

1. Gentle Candle Warming — Charcoal-Free

Place a suitable tealight candle beneath the brass incense dish to warm natural frankincense and myrrh gradually.

The adjustable-height design helps control the distance between the flame and the dish, allowing you to explore gentler or more intense warming.

This method generally creates less visible smoke than direct charcoal burning and allows a more gradual fragrance release.

2. Traditional Charcoal Heating

For a stronger, more traditional incense experience, use the appropriate charcoal-heating accessory with a compatible Heat Shield Sheet.

Charcoal provides more intense heat, allowing the resins to release their aromas more rapidly and often with more pronounced smoke.

Explore the Changing Aromas

Different heating intensities can reveal different sides of the same resin. Somali Lemon and Sudanese Citrus Frankincense, for example, may begin with bright citrus notes before gradually developing warmer, woody, smoky and resinous layers.

How to Use & Care

Gentle Candle Warming

  1. Place the incense burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  2. Position a suitable tealight candle beneath the brass incense dish.
  3. Add a small amount of natural resin to the dish, using a suitable liner if desired.
  4. Adjust the height to find your preferred warming intensity.
  5. Observe how the aroma develops as the resin warms.
  6. Extinguish the candle after use and allow the burner to cool completely.

Care & Safety

  • Start with a small amount of resin and increase gradually.
  • Use in a well-ventilated area.
  • Never leave a lit candle or burning charcoal unattended.
  • Keep away from children, pets and flammable materials.
  • Do not move the burner while the heat source is lit or any components are hot.
  • Use charcoal only with appropriate accessories and fire-safety precautions, preferably outdoors.
  • Allow all components to cool completely before cleaning.
  • Gently remove cooled resin residue and keep the brass parts clean and dry.

Charcoal-free warming generally produces less visible smoke than direct charcoal burning, but does not mean smoke-free or emission-free use.

 I mainly use the Chalice for frankincense. The mica sheet makes the scent noticeably softer and less smoky than putting the resin directly on charcoal.

I bought the Lotus because I liked the shape, but after using it for a few weeks I appreciate the practical details even more. I usually heat myrrh on the mica sheet because the scent develops more slowly and I can notice its warm, slightly sweet character better. When I want something stronger, I just place the resin directly on the charcoal. Having both options in the same burner is very convenient.

I originally planned to use the Chalice only for resin, but now I also use it for sage. The mesh is wide enough that the burning end doesn’t block the whole surface, and the ash stays inside the ceramic bowl instead of falling onto the table.  I've had this for just over three weeks and still haven't made it through all eleven resins. I started with the Royal Green, then compared the Somali and Ethiopian frankincense on separate evenings. They're definitely not interchangeable — some are brighter, while others feel much drier or earthier. The 10g jars looked small when I opened the box, but considering how little I use each time, they're plenty for sampling properly.

 I've always burned frankincense on charcoal, so the first thing I noticed was how different the scent was with this burner. I started with the dish fairly high above the candle and lowered it little by little. The Royal Green took a few minutes to warm up, but once it did I could smell the fresh, slightly citrusy notes much more clearly. With charcoal I usually get a stronger hit of smoke straight away. This is slower, but much nicer for an evening indoors.

 I bought this mostly because I wanted to try the Royal Green. The pieces I received were genuinely green rather than the yellowish frankincense I've bought before. I only use two or three small pieces at a time, so the 20g goes further than I expected. The scent is cleaner and brighter than my usual frankincense, especially when warmed slowly.

One tea light gives more than enough warmth for that space, and I like that I don't end up with the charcoal smell lingering afterwards. I usually warm the resin for 20–30 minutes, blow out the candle and sometimes come back to the same resin later. It makes a small amount last surprisingly well.

 There was a bit of trial and error on the first evening. I put the dish too close to the flame and the resin started smoking more than I wanted. Once I raised it a couple of centimetres, it settled down and released fragrance without much visible smoke. I'd suggest starting higher than you think and moving down slowly.
